Ivy League Players of the Week
OFFENSE Penn sophomore quarterback Bryan Walker [Agoura Hills, Calif.] came off the bench into a scoreless game to replace injured starter Pat McDermott and led his Quakers to a convincing 38-21 victory over Yale. Walker completed 10-of-20 passes for 143 yards and two scores while Penn played turnover-free ball to build a 38-0 lead after three quarters.
DEFENSE Brown junior linebacker Zak DeOssie [North Andover, Mass.] had yet another DeOssian day in a 38-24 win at Cornell. The Buck Buchanan Award candidate seemed to be in on every play, recording a career-high 18 total tackles, including five solo stops, and 1.5 tackles for a loss. DeOssie, one of the nation’s most prolific ball stoppers, ranks second nationally in total tackles [13.0], solo stops [7.4] and tackles for a loss [2.2].
SPECIAL TEAMS Princeton senior cornerback Jay McCareins [Naperville, Ill.] returned a kickoff 93 yards for the game-winning touchdown with 7:07 remaining in the Tigers’ 27-24 win at Harvard. McCareins, who also had a fumble recovery on kickoff coverage, recorded Princeton's first kickoff return for a touchdown since 1992 and led Princeton to its first win against Harvard since 1995.
ROOKIE Columbia freshman kicker Jon Rocholl [Fort Wayne, Ind.] hit two field goals of 39 yards to account for all the Lions' scoring at Dartmouth. He improved to 10-for-12 for the season and is back on pace to break the school record for points in a season by a Columbia kicker (58 by Joe Aldrich '96). After having his school record-setting string of seven consecutive made field goals snapped at Princeton, he has hit his last three.
Ivy League Honor Roll
Columbia junior free safety Tad Crawford [Burlington, Ont.] had a game-high 11 tackles to increase his League-leading total to 71. He also broke up a pass and blocked a Dartmouth field goal attempt in a 17-6 loss in Hanover.
Harvard junior running back Clifton Dawson [Scarborough, Ont.] finished with 203 yards on 35 carries and touchdowns of 20 and 29 yards in Harvard's 27-24 loss to Princeton. It was the 17th time Dawson has broken the 100-yard mark and also moved him into second on Harvard's all-time rushing chart (3,232), leaving him 98 yards shy of Chris Menick's career mark.
Dartmouth senior defensive lineman Anthony Gargiulo [Neshanic Station, N.J.] played a key role for the Big Green who held Columbia to a pair of second-quarter field goals. Gargiulo had four tackles for a loss for 27 yards and three sacks for a combined loss of 23 yards. All three sacks came in the second half, including two on back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter.
Penn sophomore defensive lineman Naheem Harris [Brooklyn, N.Y.] had five tackles, including four solo stops, in a 38-21 win over Yale. On the Bulldogs' second drive of the game, Harris twice got to Yale QB Jeff Mroz, once assisted and once alone. Both were nine-yard losses. Through the first three quarters, the Penn defense held the Elis to minus 16 rushing yards.
Brown junior returnman Brandon Markey [Seattle, Wash.] was the difference in special teams play, helping the Bears to a school-record 222 kickoff return yards in a 38-24 win at Cornell. With Brown trailing 17-10, Markey took the kickoff and returned it 92 yards for a touchdown. Markey also played a key role in Brown's first four kickoff returns, fielding the kick and handing off to sophomore Nkosi Still [Hyde Park, Mass.], who went for 103 yards on kickoff returns.
Penn sophomore punter Anthony Melillo [Bernardsville, N.J.] averaged 41.2 yards per punt and 22 yards per carry in a 38-21 win over Yale. On two occasions he pulled the ball back, fearing a blocked punt, and ran for a first down in slippery conditions. Those runs were for 25 and 19 yards.
Brown senior wide receiver Jarrett Schreck [Montville, N.J.] may have only caught three passes in a 38-24 win over Cornell, but each was for big yardage. After Brown fell behind 24-17, Schreck — on the next play from scrimmage — hauled in an 85-yard scoring pass, out-racing the Cornell defense down the sideline for the fourth-longest pass play in school history. On the day, Schreck caught three passes for 136 yards.
Cornell sophomore tailback Luke Siwula [Cortland, N.Y.] posted his fourth 100-yard effort of the season with 162 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 32 carries in a 38-24 loss to Brown. Siwula’s three-yard score in the fourth quarter put the Big Red up for the final time at 24-17. He was the leading part of a Cornell rushing attack that had 314 yards on the ground.
Princeton junior quarterback Jeff Terrell [Chagrin Falls, Ohio] completed 15-of-26 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown, and he was not intercepted in Princeton's first win against Harvard since 1995. Terrell threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Brendan Circle to eliminate Princeton's first deficit and added a two-point conversion run to open a 17-10 lead.
Yale junior wide receiver Ashley Wright [Mobile, Ala.] caught four passes for 90 yards in a 38-21 loss at Penn. Two of those receptions were fourth-quarter touchdowns, giving him six on the season. Those touchdowns came after he was x-rayed and placed into an air cast because of a wicked shot to his leg by a Quaker helmet.
