Princeton lived up to its lofty No. 4 ranking on Friday, winning the women's Ivy League Heptagonals Cross Country Championship by a wide margin. The Tigers — who won with 42 last season — posted a team score of 25 points, the lowest since Dartmouth had 23 in 1997.
Following Princeton were Columbia (69), Brown (104), Penn (116), Harvard (117), Yale (133), Cornell (138) and Dartmouth (229).
Individually, the Tigers took first and second as sophomore Liz Costello finished in a winning 17:14.4 followed by fellow sophomore Christy Johnson's 17:23.7. It was just the second time Princeton had the race's top two finishers (Emily Kroshus and Cack Ferrell in 2003).
Defending champion Lindsay Donaldson of Yale couldn't match the kicks of Costello and Johnson, taking third in 17:30.9, followed by Columbia senior Carmen Ballard (17:37.4) and Princeton junior Megan Brandeland (17:45.9).
All five of Princeton's scorers were among the top nine finishers. Junior Jolee Van Leuven was eighth (17:51.2) and freshman Ashley Higginson right behind at ninth (17:51.4).
"This is the beginning of our Championship season," said Princeton Coach Peter Farrell. "Notch No. 1. I knew Brown was going to be competitive and Columbia had a great day."
Those third-place Bears had a pair of runners in the top 10 with senior Smita Gupta in sixth (17:46.5) and sophomore Ariel Wright seventh (17:48.8).
It was a day when youth was served as 10 freshmen finished among the top 33 placers. Harvard finished a close fifth, with freshman scoring in all five places.
