PRINCETON, N.J. — It was a magical season for the Penn
volleyball team, as the Quakers came up just one game shy of what would have
been only the second undefeated Ivy slate in the nine-year history of double-round
robin play. The 2009 Ivy League champions may have missed out on perfection,
but their dominance in the League cannot be denied as Penn has accounted for
four first team All-Ivy honorees for the first time ever, in addition to the
2009 Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Year, Elizabeth Semmens
and Lauren Martin, respectively.
Semmens, a senior outside hitter, becomes just the third Quaker to win the League's
highest individual honor and first since Elisabeth Kwak-Hefferan in 2003. A
first-time All-Ivy selection, she was voted unanimously to the first team after
leading a Penn offense that led the Ivies in kills. Individually, Semmens finished
second in the League in the category with 209 kills in Ivy play.
Martin wasted no time stepping into her role as a rookie starter for the League
title holders, as the freshman right side hitter finished second in hitting
percentage (.333), fifth in kills per set (3.94) and fifth in points per set
(4.15) en route to four Ivy Rookie of the Week honors. She is the lone freshman
on this year's first team and the first frosh since fellow first-teamer Alexis
Crusey of Yale to garner first team accolades.
Rounding out the Penn contingent on the the first team is junior setter Megan
Tryon and junior libero Madison Wojciechowski. For
Tryon, it is her first All-Ivy nod after pacing the League-leading Quaker offense
all year long. The unanimous pick led the Ivies in assists by more than an assist
per game, dishing out 701 for a 12.98 per set average in Ivy competition.
Tryon's classmate was nothing short of brilliant as well, as Wojciechowski shattered
her own school record for digs in a season with 566. She finished in a tie for
first with 5.63 digs per set in Ivy play.
2008 champions Yale finished just two games back of Penn this season and yield
a pair of first team members in senior classmates Cat Dailey
and Alexis Crusey. Dailey joins Semmens and Tryon as the only
other unanimous selection on this year's team. The 2008 Ivy Player of the Year
finished first in service aces (18), second in points (4.49/set), eighth in
hitting percentage (.266) and fourth in kills (3.98/set) from the outside hitter
position.
Crusey joins an elite group of only five players in the 31-year history of Ivy
volleyball All-Ivy to earn first team honors in each of her four years (Melissa
Ingalls, Penn, 1986-87-88-89; Kristi Hakman, Princeton, 1988-89-90-91; Ayesha
Attoh, Princeton, 1994-95-96-97; Tomo Nakanishi, Brown, 1996-97-98-99; Elizabeth
Bishop, Cornell, 2003-04-05-06.). She hit .241 on the year for the Bulldogs
and finished second on the team with 253 kills.
Rounding out the first team is senior outside hitter Sheena Donohue
of Princeton. Donohue emerged from the shadows of former teammates and three-time
first team All-Ivy duo, Lindsey Ensign and Parker Henritze,
to virtually carry the young Tigers to an impressive third-place finish. The
three-time Ivy Player of the Week posted huge numbers, especially late in the
year, leading the Ivies in kills (247) and points (261.5) while leading Princeton
to 10 wins in its final 16 matches.
