PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 2011 season gets underway as every Ivy League squads take to the pitch this weekend. All eight squads open play on Friday, while each plays a second contest on Sunday.

A combined 78 non-conference games are on the Ivy schedule for a second consecutive season, and the Ancient Eight look to get off to a strong start against some top-ranked teams this weekend.

First-year head coach Theresa Wagner takes her Dartmouth side south to Texas, opening the season Friday at Texas A&M, which was ranked No. 18 in the Aug. 23 NSCAA/adidas national poll. The Big Green then face Texas, a preseason top-25 side, on Sunday.

Princeton and Cornell will also test their mettle right off the bat as the Tigers head west to face No. 23 ranked Long Beach State while the Big Red host No. 4 Maryland. Both of those rankings are from the Aug. 23 Soccer America Top 25 poll. Defening Ivy champion Penn opens the 2011 season at home, hosting UMBC and Delaware at Rhodes Field where the Quakers went 6-4 in 2010.

The Ivies went 2-5-1 in season-openers in 2010 while also compiling a 40-31-7 (.563) overall mark in non-conference play.

Players to watch for this fall including reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Kerry Scalora, a midfielder for the Quakers. As a freshman, Scalora ranked among the League’s best in points (No. 8, 12) and goals (No. 6, 5). Princeton welcomes the return of midfield duo Caitlin Blosser and Jen Hoy who combined for 13 goals and seven assists last year, ranking No. 3 and No. 4, respectively among all Ivies in total points.
