Women's Volleyball Weekly Release - Week 11
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Yale controls its own Ivy League women's volleyball title destiny going into the final weekend of the 2011 season.
Yale (17-5, 11-1 Ivy League) can clinch its second-straight Ivy title and third in four years with a win at Harvard (11-11, 4-8) or a loss by Columbia (at Penn) or Princeton (vs. Cornell) Friday night. The Bulldogs have been a dominant squad all season, leading all of Division I in digs per set (19.00) and leading the Ivy League in hitting percentage (.248), opponent hitting percentage (.165), kills (13.95) and assists (13.04).
Ivy Notes
- Harvard senior libero Christine Wu is now
second in the Ivy League records book for career digs with 1,801 to
her credit. Penn's Madison Wojciechowski (2007-10)
tops the list at 2,141.
- Dartmouth senior outside hittier Madeline Baird needs just four more kills to enter the League's top 10 for career kils. Baird enters her final weekend in a Big Green uniform with 1,245 career kills, which already ranks first in school history. Baird is also in the Dartmouth career list in digs at sixth with 1,107 entering her final two matches.
- Columbia junior middle blocker Megan Gaughn recorded her 1,000th career kill against Dartmouth on Nov. 5. Her 1,009 all-time kills sits third on the school's list behind Amalia Viti (1,256) and Kathy Lavold (1,158).
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cornell senior middle blocker Madeleine
Przybyl (Christchurch, Va.) was all over the
court for the Big Red over the weekend and was instrumental in
helping the Big Red to its five-victory against Harvard.
In front of her home crowd on Senior Night, Przybyl posted a solid game all-around with 11 kills with 17 digs and seven block assists to lead Cornell to its third Ivy victory of the season. The previous night in a tough five-set loss to Dartmouth, she tied for the team high with 13 kills hitting a match-best .367 with 16 digs and two block assists.
In addition to her outstanding hitting percentage on the weekend (.352) and nine total blocks, Przybyl also had 30 service receptions over the two matches with just one error.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Yale freshman outside hitter Allie Frappier
(San Mateo, Calif.) pounded a team-best 31 kills, including a
match-high 19 in a win over Princeton, in a weekend two-match sweep
to help Yale clinch a share of the Ivy League title.
Frappier posted double-doubles in kills and digs in both victories. In the win against the Tigers, she stuck for kills on consecutive points to give the Bulldogs a 22-19 lead in the second set as the Bulldogs eventually tied the match at one game each. Against Penn the night before, Frappier delivered a clutch kill to tie the first set at 19 and later gave Yale a 23-20 lead as the Bulldogs grabbed the first set.
She now ranks eighth in the Ivy League in kills per set with a 3.03 average and stands second on the team. Frappoier’s stands fifth on the team with a 2.76 digs per set average.
