Women's Volleyball Weekly Release - Week 6
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Coming off a Saturday where all four Ivy League women's volleyball matches were decided in five sets, the second full weekend of the conference slate sets up to be another action-packed weekend on the courts.
Yale (9-4, 3-0 Ivy) and Princeton (10-5, 3-0) look to create some separation at the top of the tandings in some key contests -- at home for the Bulldogs against Dartmouth (9-5, 1-2) and Harvard (8-5, 1-2) and on the road for the Tigers at Columbia (8-5, 2-1) and Cornell (3-11, 0-3).
Columbia (8-5, 2-1) hopes to stay close to the League leaders but has the tough task of hosting Princeton and and defending co-champion Penn (5-8, 1-2) on back-to-back days. Brown (5-9, 1-2) is the other Ivy team at home this weekend, hosting Harvard and Dartmouth and hoping to break up four-team logjam for fourth place.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Yale sophomore setter Kendall Polan (Cardiff,
Calif.) continued her stellar Ivy League play following last
season’s conference rookie of the year honor, dishing out
match-highs in assists during two conference wins last weekend
against Cornell and Columbia.
Against Cornell, Polan had six kills, hit .462, posted 14 digs and tallied three block assists and an ace. The next day against Columbia, Polan also contributed 18 digs, two aces and a block assist. In the deciding fifth set, Polan assisted on the most important points of the match for Yale. First, Polan set up sophomore outside hitter Erica Reetz for back-to-back points to tie the final set at 8. With the set tied at 10, Polan lined up three straight kills to give the Bulldogs a commanding three-point lead.
Polan ranks first in the League, overall in assists per set. In only her second season, she recently moved into eighth place all-time in assists at Yale.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Princeton freshman middle blocker Nicole Kincade
(Franklin Hills, N.J.) had her best weekend with 23 kills and 13
assisted blocks for a total of 29.5 points in Princeton's Ivy sweep
of Harvard and Dartmouth.
Kincade converted nine kills and assisted on six blocks, adding three assists, in the Tigers' five-set over the Crimson to start the weekend. In the 3-2 win over the Big Green, she recorded career highs in both kills (14) and blocks (7).
