Women's Volleyball Weekly Release - Week 4

PRINCETON, N.J. -- Ivy League women's volleyball teams have a light calendar this week as Ivy League play begins.

Only five matches are on the docket this week, four of them kicking off Ancient Eight action this coming weekend. All five matches are on the schedule for The Ivy League® Digital Network, including Cornell's debut.

Two Ivies took on nationally-ranked foes over the weekend as Yale faced top-ranked Penn State at Rec Hall on Saturday night and Dartmouth (7-4) hosted ninth-ranked Minnesota during its tournament Saturday. Yale (6-3) saw a four-match winning streak halted in the loss to the Nittany Lions. The Bulldogs' three losses have come at the hands of Missouri, No. 7 Stanford and No. 1 Penn State.

Penn was also riding a four-match winning streak over the weekend, but dropped a 3-1 decision to host Villanova on Saturday night. The Quakers (5-5) had won three five-setters in that streak and have recorded four of their five wins this season in five-set matches. 

Harvard (5-3) defeated cross-city rival Boston College for the first time since 2002 on Saturday night. the Crimson hit a red-hot .452 in the first three sets and then held on for a 25-23 win in the clincher for a four-set win. 

In the first Ivy action of the year, Harvard hosts Dartmouth and Princeton hosts Penn on Friday night. Yale hosts Brown and Cornell hosts Columbia on Saturday. 

 

CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brown senior Thea Derrough (La Jolla, Calif.) hit .328 last week as the Bears went 2-1 at the Temple Invitattional. Derrough was steady throughout with 28 kills and seven blocks, including a 10-kill, six-block outing in a win over Delaware State. She is the first Bear to win Player of the Week since September 2010.

Yale sophomore Jesse Ebner (Portola Valley, Calif.) helped the Bulldogs to a 2-1 week at the Penn State Classic, earning all-tournament honors. She had 27 kills and hit .321 on the weekend, including a double-double against Eastern Kentucky with 16 kills and 10 digs to go along with four aces and four blocks.

CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Dartmouth oustide hitter Emily Astarita (Setauket, N.Y.) recorded back-to-back double-doubles, including an impressive showing against ninth-ranked Minnesota. After seeing limited action on Friday, Astarita had 11 kills and 11 digs in a four-set win over New Hampshire to begin her Saturday. She closed out the weekend by hitting .429 against the Gophers with 14 kills and 12 digs in a three-set loss to the nation's No. 9-ranked squad.

Harvard outside hitter Grace Weghorst (Austin, Texas) hit .224 on the week and had 11 kills in Harvard's four-set win over Boston College on Saturday night. It was the first time the Crimson beat the Eagles since 2002.
